Privacy and Security are interdependent and they are often synonymous with each other. In today’s digital era, technical teams and IT professionals are not the only ones who need to worry about cybersecurity. The reality is that security, safety, and privacy are issues that everyone needs to understand. This is particularly important as more organizations are implementing cloud-hosted information systems with many different providers. Managing many disparate systems and maintaining security while protecting the integrity of the organization’s users have become much more complex.

Digital Privacy is about the ability to protect, as well as, disclose data consensually, and with expectations about the context and scope of sharing that data. Identifiability, linkability of data, and the mining of vast quantities of aggregated information all erode the individual’s ability to manage disclosure, context, and scope. It is the responsibility of the organization to protect the privacy of their staff and users and only disclose the minimum amount of information necessary while honouring British Columbia’s Privacy laws and regulations.

Security refers to protective measures put in place to protect digital data from unauthorized users. Technology has gotten more advanced, so have hackers or cybercriminals, and so should data security measures. While security does not guarantee that data or information cannot be compromised, strict security measures and protocols help to prevent unauthorized access. The organization is responsible to maintain the integrity of the systems and associated data.

At Spindrift Consulting we can work with your organization in providing assessments and analysis of your practises and processes. We can help determine where your most significant risks exist and provide assistance in reducing the threats for your data and users.
